Father's Day: Holding Gratitude and Grief Together
Father's Day can be a beautiful celebration, but for many, it also carries a quiet ache.
Today, we celebrate the fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, mentors, and father figures who have loved, guided, protected, and sacrificed for those they cherish. Your presence matters more than words can express, and today we honor the impact you've made.
But I also want to take a moment to acknowledge those whose hearts feel a little heavier today.
Some of us are celebrating with our fathers. Others are remembering them.
I lost my dad at a very young age, and while time has a way of teaching us how to carry loss, it doesn't erase the love or the memories we wish we could have made. Father's Day has reminded me that grief and gratitude can exist in the same space. We can miss someone deeply while still choosing to celebrate the love they gave us.
If today is difficult for you, know that your feelings are valid. You don't have to force yourself to be cheerful. It's okay to smile at a memory, cry over what was lost, or simply take the day one moment at a time.
And if you're fortunate enough to spend today with your father or a father figure, give them a hug. Make the phone call. Take the picture. Say the words that often go unspoken. These moments become the memories we carry.
To every father doing their best, every person grieving a father, every single parent carrying both roles, and every father figure who stepped in when someone else couldn't, Happy Father's Day.
May today remind us that love leaves a lasting legacy, and those we love continue to shape who we become, even when they are no longer beside us.
With love,
